Understanding Spiritual Warfare: It’s About Territory

Understanding Spiritual Warfare: It’s About Territory
May 23, 2017

Let’s take a camping trip around the topic of our thoughts and the mind. This is the biggest area where the battles begin concerning spiritual warfare. I consider this area of the mind as a “territory.” According to the Word, the one who governs the land rules the territory. A territory is defined in the dictionary as, “a field or sphere of action, thought, etc.; domain or province of something and any separate tract of land belonging to a state, government.” Notice the word “government.” The territory of our thoughts is the central field of action and dominion, and it will reflect who is governing our lives, whether it is God and His word, or me, with my opinions, or the devil and his lies. I have to ask myself, “Who’s going to possess this territory of thought and then who will govern it?”

The Bible plainly points to us as the ones who must take dominion and possess this territory, and by doing so, we are establishing the rule, or government, the Kingdom of God, in our lives.

James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you,” read this verse like this, “Submit yourselves therefore to God, who is the reigning governmental authority. Resist the devil, who has a defeated government with no authority, and he will flee from you.” Tammie 4:7

We are the ones who must resist him. God will not resist Satan for us, although He has given us the Holy Spirit to help us. When the devil tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, He resisted him with a swift response of, “it is written.” Jesus was not ignorant of┬áSatan’s devices, but was very astute. We also should follow in his foot steps. 2 Corinthians 2:11 says, “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” Satan doesn’t have to get an advantage of us, unless we let him. So the objective in this war is to not let him, and to become informed of his devices.

So what are Satan’s devices?

Satan’s #1 device is “words.”
His use of words persuaded Eve and she took the bait, and believed the lie. However, Adam, Mr. Big, Dumb and Happy, who was the King of the territory, earth, did not believe the lie. He simply came into agreement with his wife, Eve, and gave up his authority that was delegated by God. Immediately, death reigned.

There is good news! Jesus took that authority away from Satan and gave it to the believer. Satan wants to persuade us that God is the liar. I can’t stress this point enough, know what God’s word says about absolutely everything concerning our lives. Satan has power, but he does not have authority. That is why he is out to get your authority. For example, a semi-truck has power, but a police officer who directs traffic has authority. When we come into agreement with the devil’s “words,” we are giving him our authority which in turn gives him access to rule over us. Then before you know it, those words are flying out of our mouths and producing a crop. “Life and death are in the power of the tongue!”

Words have power and authority. They are the most powerful things in the universe. Words are seeds that are designed by God to reproduce after their own kind and Satan knows this, because he heard God speak the law of reciprocity over all creation. Jesus refused Satan’s “words” when being tempted by him. “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:21-22. Being a doer of the Word is easier said than done, however, it is the only path to mental freedom.

So while we are advancing in the skills of spiritual warfare, the most important requirement is to always recognize that the central areas of opposition occurs in the mind, and the second area of opposition will be our flesh.

Remember the word “territory” throughout this teaching on Understanding Spiritual Warfare. It’s all about who is going to have the dominion of the land. “For we are kings and priests unto our God!”

Next time I’ll continue taking a further look at the words, war and warfare which occurs only five times in the New Testament, and with amazement these verses never directly refers to the devil.
It’s time for us to take our God given right of dominion over our thoughts and become strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, that we may do exploits in His name!!

Blessings!
